An elderly Italian man killed his wife, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for eight years, with three gunshots in a local hospital in Rome's Tuscan town, media reported Monday.
The 77-year-old man, whose name was not given by police, had been told ealier on Saturday that his wife, 82, was in the final stages of the disease.
The former traffic policeman, who "couldn't stand seeing her suffering," returned Saturday afternoon with a pistol to the ward where his wife was a patient.
He then covered her forehead and chest with towels and shot her three times, in the face and heart with the presence of other patients and staff, police said.
He was arrested immediately. It was not clear what charges he would face.
