Hopes were rising that the British teacher jailed for allowing her class name a teddy bear Mohammed would be pardoned as British Muslim peers prepared to meet President Omar al-Bashir of the Sudan Monday.
Lord Nazir Ahmed and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, both British Muslim peers, had been due to return home today, but will now stay for a third day of talks.
Ahmed and Warsi had spent two days for delicate negotiations with Sudanese officials. Gibbons's chief defence lawyer said Sunday he was confident the primary school teacher would be pardoned.
"We think that there's a very good chance of this initiative succeeding," said Omar Daair, a spokesman for the British embassy in Khartoum.
The 54-year-old teacher, Gillian Gibbons, was sentenced to 15 days in jail by a Sudanese court for insulting Islam's prophet last Thursday.
She was arrested last Sunday and being held at an undisclosed location in Khartoum for security reasons.
The Foreign Office said she spoke of being treated well "in a comfortable and secure environment."
