The U.S.-led Coalition forces during an operation have killed a suspected senior Taliban commander and four other militants in southern Afghan Helmand province, said a Coalition statement received Monday morning.
"Several militants were killed during a Coalition forces operation Sunday in Helmand Province targeting Taliban command-and-control networks in the area," the statement said.
The Coalition forces in an air strike destroyed a vehicle in the Musa Qaleh district of Helmand and killed all five occupants, one of whom intelligence reports indicated to be a senior Taliban commander, it said.
The senior Taliban commander, according to the Coalition forces, is believed to be involved in the March 2007 kidnapping of Italian journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo, his interpreter and his driver.
Reports indicate the individual is also responsible for a number of mortar attacks on Coalition bases as well as several improvised explosive device attacks, the statement further said.
There were no immediate indications of injuries or deaths to civilians, it added.
Afghanistan has witnessed the bloodiest year in 2007 and rising militancy-related violence has left over 5,900 people killed, mostly insurgents, in the war-torn country.
