Croatian President Stjepan Mesic Monday urged ethnic Serbs in Kosovo to become active players in politics of the breakaway Serbian province.
"They should no longer be an object of somebody else's policy on Kosovo; they should become active players," Mesic told reporters at NATO headquarters after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
He asked Belgrade to let Serbs in Kosovo to engage the ethnic Albanian authority.
"Belgrade should allow Serbs in Kosovo to participate in creating regulation in Kosovo and in discussing the status of Kosovo," he said.
If the ethnic Albanian majority and Serbs could sit together and communicate, a solution could be found, he said.
It is up to Belgrade to make a decision, said Mesic.
De Hoop Scheffer, who paid a brief visit to Kosovo last Friday, said the situation in Kosovo is ever more sensitive because the United Nations is expected to deliver its assessment of the U.N.-led talks between Kosovo's ethnic Albanians and Serbian representatives very soon.
He said the NATO troops in Kosovo, under the name KFOR, are fully prepared to protect the Serb minority and to stop any violence. At the same time, he asked Belgrade to tone down its rhetoric. "KFOR's task will be easier if there is no inflammatory rhetoric from Belgrade," he said.
