German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is most likely to compete with Angela Merkel as candidate for chancellor in the next general elections in 2009, a recent survey showed Monday.

Steinmeier, a Social Democrat, was considered the party's "most promising chancellor candidate," according to an Allensbach poll which was based on interviews with over 600 leaders in business, politics and public administration.

Steinmeier even outmatched the conservative Christian Democrat Merkel as Germany's most populous politician in a recent survey by FG Wahlen.

The foreign minister, who served as former chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's chief of staff, has consolidated his position in German politics as he took over Franz Muentefering last month as vice chancellor.
