Ecuador's Foreign Ministry said Monday that Ecuador backed Bolivia's president and its government without reserve and rejected the attempts by part of Bolivian society to destabilize the nation.
"Ecuador opposes whatever attempts made to disrupt that territory's calm; of the government of its president, Evo Morales; or of its duly elected bodies," the ministry said in a statement. It called for peace to reign so that a free, just and democratic society can be created.
Governors from some of Bolivia's richest regions -- Beni, Pando, Tarija and Santa Cruz -- and social leaders are staging a hunger strike and are calling for civil resistance to oppose a planned new constitution.
The constitution, passed in late November, reduced the income the regions receive from the central government. Source: Xinhua
