Ecuador's Constituent Assembly, the body set up to review the constitution, began its six-month task Monday amid a debate on how to apply its own rules.

The body, which convenes in the town of Montecristi in the coastal province of Manabi, has seven days to establish these measures, Luis Hernandez, a member of the Ethical and Democratic Network party said.

However, it is expected that the first draft will be passed in 72 hours.

Representatives backing the president have 80 of the 130 seats in the Assembly, while in Congress the opposition has the majority.

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has repeatedly described the legislature as incompetent and corrupt.

Correa now has his way free to reform Ecuador in line with his socialist ideas, but faces ever more intense criticism from the opposition, who claim he wants to concentrate all state power in his hands.

During a Sunday radio show, Correa said he expects the body to reform tax collection by "rationalizing many taxes and making those who have more pay more."

All the parties elected to the assembly -- the Pachakutik party, the Patriotic Society, the Social Christian Party and the Renewing Institutional Party -- will each hold individual meetings to decide their strategies and prepare their observations with respect to the rules.
