U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in Afghanistan capital Kabul Monday to hold talks with President Hamid Karzai, Afghan Presidential spokesman Hamayon Hamidzada said Tuesday.
"Defense Secretary Robert Gates is in Kabul to exchange views with President," Hamayonzada told newsmen at his weekly press briefing.
He did not give more details. But said it is a significant visit and can further boost bilateral relations.
This is the third visit of the Pentagon Chief to Afghanistan since assuming office one year ago.
Gates's visit to Afghanistan is taking place amid increasing Taliban-led insurgency and conflicts that has claimed the lives of nearly 6,000 people over the past 11 months.
A suicide bombing against NATO troops in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province on Monday left the attacker dead while a suicide car bomb in the capital city Kabul Tuesday morning wounded 22 persons all of then civilians.
More than 55,000 NATO-led peacekeeping troops and the U.S.-led Coalition forces have been hunting down Taliban and associate militants to stabilize security in the post-Taliban nation. Source: Xinhua
