The U.S. military on Tuesday said a militant killed recently during U.S. forces operation was a close aide of al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri.
The Syrian national, Abu Maysara, also known as Abu Basha'ir "was a member of Abu Ayyub al-Masri's inner circle and served as a senior advisor," a military statement said.
"Abu Maysara was positively identified using DNA evidence," the statement said.
Maysara was killed during operation in northeast of Samarra, 120 km north of Baghdad, along with six other terrorists, it said.
Maysara was responsible for murder, torture and providing extremist spiritual guidance for the terrorists, along with providing logistical support to al-Qaida operation, the statement said.
The military said that Abu Maysara was captured by coalition forces in Fallujah during major offensive against insurgents in the city in 2004, it said.
"Maysara fought against the Government of Iraq in Fallujah in 2004 and was reportedly one of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's senior advisors," it added. Source: Xinhua
