U.S. President George W. Bush Tuesday urged the international community to keep up diplomatic pressure on Iran to halt its nuclear program, despite a top intelligence report saying that Tehran had abandoned atomic weapons aims several years ago.
"Iran needs to be taken seriously as a threat to peace," Bush said at a press conference at the White House.
He said Iran would be still dangerous if it had the necessary knowledge to make nuclear weapons.
Bush made the remarks after the U.S. National Security Estimate report released Monday said that Iran had halted work toward making a nuclear weapon in 2003 under international pressure, and was unlikely to be able to produce enough enriched uranium for a bomb until between 2010 and 2015.
The estimate was less severe than a 2005 report that said the Iranian leadership was "determined to develop nuclear weapons despite its international obligations and international pressure."
But the latest report also said Iran could reverse that decision and eventually produce a nuclear weapon if it wanted. Source: Xinhua
