A moderate quake measuring 5.6 magnitude on the Richter scale struck eastern part of Indonesia Tuesday evening, but there was no report of damages or casualty, said the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.
The quake jolted at 22:48 Jakarta time (1548 GMT) with epicenter at 89 kilometers southeast Ende town of East Nusa Tenggara and at 105 kilometers in depth, an official of the agency said.
In September 2007, a 7.9-magnitude quake rocked Bengkulu province in Sumatra Island of western Indonesia, in which 23 people were killed and thousands of buildings destructed.
In 2004, over 170,000 people were killed in Aceh province in northern tip of Sumatra Island after a tsunami triggered by a powerful quake devastated coastal areas of the province and other countries in southeast Asia.
Indonesia is laid at a vulnerable zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates, stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, meet, which causes frequent volcanic movements.
