A Myanmar high-ranking information official has urged media persons of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to unitedly distribute authentic and constructive information to resist the media influence of some powerful nations, the state-run newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported Wednesday.
"Nowadays, some powerful nations are misusing media as a weapon to interfere in internal affairs of small nations," warned Brigadier-General Kyaw Hsan, Myanmar Information Minister, when he addressed a meeting of the Committee of Culture and Information (COCI) of ASEAN in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw Tuesday, the report said.
"Although the power nations should use their media might in building world peace and peaceful solution of regional disputes, they are inciting for instability in the country they want to interfere and they are misusing media for biased information with negative views to tarnish the image of the country intentionally," Kyaw Hsan blamed.
"Development of the ASEAN region would be ensured by letting the international community correctly know about the ASEAN through communications and information techniques," he noted.
He stressed the vital role of the culture and information sector in building peaceful and developed socio-culture community, the goal of ASEAN.
He called for efforts for the realization of the information projects initiated by the regional leaders.
The ASEAN COCI is implementing culture and information projects annually and Tuesday's meeting, attended by representatives of the10-nation ASEAN and those from the ASEAN Secretariat, approved some new projects for next year.
