A largest information and communication technology (ICT) park in Myanmar, also known as the Yadanabon Cyber City, is scheduled to open on Dec. 14, the local 7-Day news journal reported Wednesday.
The opening of the country's first ever cyber city will be attached with an eight-day ICT week exhibition activities to be joined by over 100 local and foreign ICT companies, the report said.
The 4,050-hectare Yadanabon cyber city project, located in hilly Pyin Oo Lwin near a highway, 67 km east of the second largest city of Mandalay in the northern part, was hastily implemented since mid-last year after jungle areas that there were cleared to pave way for the construction project.
The cyber city project included production of hardware used in mobile phones, planning of software and hardware programs, building of modern infrastructure such as teleport and incubation system which can receive international information network and reproduce it as well as some housing projects, according to official sources.
In its earlier efforts to attract foreign investment in the cyber city project, Myanmar offered to grant both foreign and local entrepreneurs to be engaged in ICT business in the project and separate plots were allotted for foreign and local companies with equal rights offered to develop the silicon mountain town.
According to local reports, foreign companies including Shin Satellite (Thailand), ZTE and Alcatel Shanghai Bell (ASB) (China),IP Tel Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia) and CBOSS (Russia) made investment in the project.
On completion of the cyber city project, investors will be allowed to directly export their computer accessories produced in the cyber city and one stop service center, which renders customs and banking services, will be established for the purpose, the local media said.
To enable prompt use of internet in the cyber city, various systems including ADSL, CATV, Triple Play and Wi Max were installed, experts said.
According to the experts, the Yadanabon cyber city stands at a point where new internet lines linking China, Thailand and India meet.
An airport has been reportedly built at the cyber city which is40-minute-drive from Mandalay.
It was disclosed that green light has been opened to domestic national entrepreneurs to buy land for business engagement, while foreign investors are limited to lease land only for the purpose.
Myanmar has been launching an ICT development master plan under the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) and detailed programs to link international networks are also being carried out in accordance with the master plan drafted by the Myanmar Computer Federation.
Being a signatory to the e-ASEAN Framework Agreement initiated at 2000 Singapore summit, Myanmar has formed the e-National Task Force to support the IT development.
Besides, the country has also signed a series of memorandums of understanding since 2003 with such companies as from Malaysia, Thailand, China and South Korea on ICT development.
