A senior official of Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) revealed on Thursday night that internal self criticism and disputes within the movement on taking over the Gaza Strip had recently mounted.
The official, who spoke in condition of anonymity, told the Bethlehem-based local news agency (Maan News) that there are serious discussions going on within the movement on issues related to resuming dialogue and ending Gaza takeover.
In mid June, Hamas militants took control of the security headquarters in Gaza following weeks of infighting with rival Fatah movement and had been ruling the enclave since then.
He said Hamas movement is studying proposals to bring the Gaza Strip back to Palestinian National Authority (PNA), forming a new national unity government and annulling all Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' decisions and decrees made after Gaza takeover.
The Hamas official also revealed that Hamas had held unofficial contacts with rival Fatah leaders in the Gaza Strip and "discussed many issues with them."
He said Cairo held contacts of reconciliation between the two rival movements, Fatah and Hamas, adding that many parties had conveyed ideas to President Abbas.
"These ideas and proposals are related to handing over crossings and security headquarters to Abbas, forming a new government and re- establishing Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)," said the official.
He expressed optimism that the ideas presented by Hamas "would be accepted in order to bring the national unity back to its track as soon as possible, mainly after voices within the movement call for resumption of dialogue."
