The Italian government headed by Premier Romano Prodi narrowly passed a confidence vote tied to an anti-crime package on Thursday, after the Senators voted 160-158 for it.
Losing the confidence vote would have forced the resignation of Prodi, who has been struggling for months to keep his coalition from splitting apart.
The anti-crime package included the establishment of a DNA databank to help solve crimes.
The crime bill will now be taken up by the Chamber of Deputies, or the lower chamber of parliament.
