A gunman killed two people and wounded two others in a dormitory at a training center for Christian missionaries in Denver Suburb, Colo. early Sunday, police said.
The dead were identified as a male and a female in their mid-20s, and the two injured males are 22 and 23, respectively, said Susan Medina, police spokeswoman in the Colorado town of Arvada.
About 45 people were evacuated from the dormitory to secured places following the shooting incident that took place in the Youth With a Mission (YWAM) center after midnight, she added.
The center spokesman, Paul Filidis, said that all of the four victims were staff members of the center and one of the injured was in critical situation.
"It is with great sadness that we report the shooting death of two staff members at our YWAM Denver (Arvada) training location," the organization said.
According to witnesses, the gunman was a white male in his 20s who was wearing a black jacket and a cup. He remains at large till late Sunday morning.
Several dogs have been dispatched to search the area through the night, and local residents were notified by a police automated call system to stay at home and lock the doors.
Police also asked residents to report any discovery of disturbed snow during the night, which might lead to the arrest of the gunman, Medina said.
It is the second shooting incident in no more than one week in the United States.
Eight were shot dead and five others injured when a teenager armed with a rifle opened fire at a shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska, on Wednesday, before turning the gun on himself.
The consecutive shooting incidents revived debate over gun violence in the country with a population of just over 300 million and more than 200 million privately owned firearms.
