Four more people were shot in Colorado after a gunman killed two people and injured two others at a training center dormitory for young Christian missionaries in the U.S. Midwest state early Sunday.

The four were shot in the afternoon at the parking lot outside the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, one of the largest churches in the state, El Paso County sheriff Lari Sevene told reporters. Their situation remained unclear.

By far, there has been no evidence to show that the incident was related to another one that occurred after midnight at the Youth With a Mission training center in Arvada, Denver suburb, which is 105 kilometers away.

In the earlier shooting incident, the dead were identified as a male and a female in their mid-20s, and the two injured males are 22 and 23, respectively, said Arvada police spokeswoman Susan Medina.

The center spokesman, Paul Filidis, said that all of the four victims were staff members of the center and one of the injured was in critical situation.

About 45 people were evacuated from the dormitory to secured places and local residents were notified by a police automated call system to stay at home and lock the doors, Medina said.

Police sent several dogs to search the area, and also asked residents to report any discovery of disturbed snow during the night, which might lead to the arrest of the gunman, she added.

The gunman, who was described by witnesses as a young white male in a black jacket, came to the dormitory for shelter overnight, but his request was rejected, said Peter Warren, director of Youth With a Mission Denver.

Then, the man walked inside the dormitory and opened fire, he said.

No more than one week ago, eight were shot dead and five others injured when a teenager armed with a rifle opened fire at a shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska, on Wednesday, before turning the gun on himself.

The consecutive shooting incidents revived debate over gun violence in the country with a population of just over 300 millionand more than 200 million privately owned firearms.
