The police chief of central Iraq's Babel province Major-General Qais al-Mamouri was killed when a roadside bomb struck his convoy on Sunday, a provincial police source said.
Qais al-Mamouri was killed when the roadside bomb hit his vehicle near the provincial capital of Hilla, some 100 km south of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
In addition, two of his guards were killed and six others wounded in the attack, the source said.
Local authorities imposed curfew in the city of Hilla immediately after the assassination of al-Mamouri, he said.
Babel province has long been the hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence between the Shiite and Sunni Muslim community.
