The interior ministry of the deposed Hamas government in Gaza said on Sunday that Hamas police had caught a huge amount of drugs worth three million U.S. dollars in the Gaza Strip.
Ihab al-Ghusein, spokesman for the interior ministry, told a news conference in Gaza that "seizing such amount of drugs in Gazais a proof against all rumors saying that Gaza had turned into an enclave of criminals."
"Seizing the drugs is part of the great achievements of the security forces in Gaza, which was established on professional and national bases," said the spokesman.
He said the netted drugs included marijuana, cocaine, hashish and ecstasy.
The spokesman also said "chiefs of the former security forces were head of gangs that were responsible for an awful situation, and were responsible for corruption that exhausted the innocent residents."
In mid June, Hamas ousted the security forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas following several weeks of bloody infighting with rival Fatah movement and took control of the coastal enclave.
Hamas justified its Gaza takeover by accusing Abbas and Fatah movement of causing widespread chaos and corruption in Gaza.
