mortar shelling hit Monday a prison in Baghdad and killed eight inmates, a senior government official said.
Five prisoners were killed on the scene and three of the 32injured died later in the hospital, Busho Ibrehim, deputy minister of the Justice Ministry, told the press.
According to the official, the early morning attack struck the prison which belongs to the Justice Ministry and is just beside the Interior Ministry in central Baghdad.
In addition, a rocket also landed on a refinery near Baghdad this morning, causing huge fire on an oil tank, the Oil Ministry said, adding there were no casualties in the incident.
The U.S. military, however, said in a statement that the fire in the Doura refinery was the result of a pipe explosion and the casualty information remained unclear.
Bomb, rocket and mortar attacks in Baghdad dwindled following a U.S. troops surge in the first half of this year and a ceasefire by a major anti-U.S. Shiite militia in August.
But there has been an increase of violent attacks since mid-November, prompting renewed concerns of the comeback of large scale violence.
Deadly attacks are also frequent in some provinces north of Baghdad recently.
