Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu said Monday he had accepted the resignation of Justice Minister Tudor Chiuariu.
The successor of Chiuariu would be decided after a vote at the Political Bureau of the ruling National Liberal Party, Tariceanu said, adding that it was no hurry to take a decision immediately.
Chiuariu tendered his resignation earlier Monday. "I do not want personal and political disputes to negatively influence the activity and credibility of public institutions," Chiuariu said ina press statement on Sunday.
The resignation followed a public appeal by President Traian Basescu Friday requesting Chiuariu's dismissal, as the minister was under an investigation for alleged abuse of office.
Chiuariu became justice minister in April this year amid a cabinet reshuffle. However, President Basescu requested his removal a month later.
Since joining the EU at the beginning of this year, Romania has seen a political dispute between President Basescu and the government led by Tariceanu's Liberal Party.
