Former Colombian Parliament President Luis Humberto Gomez Gallo was arrested Monday night for connections with an illegal paramilitary group, authorities said.
Gomez Gallo, who was suspected of maintaining close links with Eduardo Restrepo Victoria, a chief of the extreme right-wing United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), had been under investigation by the procuratorate for some time, said Alfredo Gomez Quintero, head of the criminal court.
After collecting enough evidence, the Supreme Court Monday afternoon issued an arrest warrant for him.
Gallo, a Conservative member of parliament, was Colombia's parliament president and Senate president from July 2004 to July 2005.
The AUC, which was established in 1996, had fiercely fought the anti-government leftist guerrillas, assassinated its political opponents and even killed civilians before joining a government-initiated peace process in April 2006. Source: Xinhua
