Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Tuesday that his country supports the ongoing process of national reconciliation and the strengthening of institutions in Iraq, the official SANA news agency reported.

Assad made the pledge while meeting with visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari during which the two sides discussed bilateral ties and means to follow up the implementation of agreements signed between the two countries.

For his part, Zebari, who arrived in Syria on Monday, expressed appreciation for Syria's efforts to host the Iraqi refugees, praising Syria's support to the national reconciliation process in Iraq.

The Iraqi top diplomat also briefed al-Assad on the security conditions in Iraq, hailing Syria's "big care of Iraq's stability and security and its efforts in this regard which have positive impacts in Iraq."
