Blaz Kavcic was elected on Wednesday the new president of the National Council, the upper house of the Slovenian parliament, said reports reaching here from Slovenian capital Ljubljana.
Kavcic, 58, was elected in the second round with 22 votes, while another candidate Alojz Kovsca received 14 votes, the Slovenian national news agency STA reported.
The third candidate was former Ljubljana University chancellor Joze Mencinger, who received 11 votes in the first round.
The National Council, which has 40 members, is a mainly advisory body composed of representatives of social, economic, professional and local interests.
After taking over, Kavcic said he would strive for constructive cooperation between various sides.
Kavcic had been elected to parliament as a member of the opposition Liberal Democrats, and the party has put forward his candidacy for the president of the National Council.
