Los Angeles police announced on Thursday that they have made a series of arrests in connection with a brush fire that destroyed dozens of homes last month.
The suspects range in age from 18 to 27, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore. He said investigators would disclose the identities of the men later.
Authorities said the suspects were having an illegal late-night campfire near a cave when the blaze broke out at on Nov. 24 in Malibu near Los Angeles.
The blaze, which also forced the evacuation of thousands of residents, took three days to contain and is regarded as the most destructive Malibu wildfire in 15 years.
Fanned by Santa Ana winds gusting up to 60 mph, the flames raced south across hills and canyons, forcing scores of residents from their homes in darkness with little or no time to retrieve keepsakes and valuables.
By the time the fire was extinguished several days later, it had charred 4,900 acres (about 1,984 hectares) and burned 53 homes beyond repair. Six firefighters were injured.
Investigators found evidence such as alcohol containers, food wrappers and bundled fire logs, Whitmore said. The next step was finding where the items came from. Source: Xinhua
