The Parliament of Solomon Islands will elect a new Prime Minister next week following ousting Manasseh Sogavare by no-confidence vote Thursday, according to Solomon Times On-line, a local news service on Friday.
Solomon Islands Parliamentary Opposition Leader Fred Fono said at a press conference after Parliament meeting on Thursday that although the former Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare was reluctant to resign, "a majority vote ensured he was voted out," said the local news service.
Fono said he had an audience with the Governor General, Sir Nathaniel Waena, who said that nominations for Prime Minister will be open on Saturday.
"The Parliament will reconvene Wednesday next week to elect the new Prime Minister," Fono said, adding "a new Cabinet will be announced Thursday or Friday next week, and will be sworn in to take office."
Fono indicated early this week he is not interested in the top post of the new government.
Sogavare became the first Prime Minister in the political history of the South Pacific island since independence in 1978. He was voted out in a no confidence motion on Thursday.
