A spokesman for Serbian Prime Minister Srdjan Djuric said on Thursday that EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn's statement on continuing talks on the future status of Kosovo is extremely important.
"It presents support to the initiative of Serbia and Russia that the United Nations Security Council should adopt a decision on Dec. 19 on the continuation of the negotiation process," Djuric was quoted by the official Tanjug news agency as saying in a statement.
Rehn said earlier in Finland capital Helsinki that he is certain the talks on the future status of Kosovo would continue and that the EU is prepared to work for a solution acceptable to both sides.
The spokesman stressed that the EU should adopt a decision on the continuation of the negotiations, instead of a decision on the deployment of its mission in Kosovo and Metohija.
Kosovo, the independence-seeking province of Serbia, has been under U.N. administration since 1999. The four-month negotiations mediated by the troika of U.S, EU and Russian envoys officially ended earlier this month without any result on the future status of Kosovo. The U.N. Security Council will debate on Dec. 19 the report of the troika.
