Over 500 U.S. artists, writers and academics wrote to President George W. Bush to urge him to end the decades-long blockade against Cuba, Cuban daily Granma reported Thursday.
They also urged the president to eliminate obstacles impeding cultural exchanges between the two countries.
"We write you this letter as representatives of the cultural sphere in the United States. We write you this letter as U.S. citizens. We write you this letter to express our dismay for the persisting hostility of your administration toward Cuba," the personalities said in the letter published by Granma daily.
"We believe it is time to promote the constructive cooperation and relation with Cuba," they said.
The initiative to write to Bush was taken by the Cuba-U.S. Cultural Interchange organization and was triggered by a letter sent by Cuba's National Ballet director Alicia Alonso.
Because of the U.S. blockade against Cuba since 1962, many Cuban artists and intellectuals can not get visas to visit the United States. Their U.S. counterparts are also barred from visiting Cuba.
