Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Friday promulgated the Constitution (Second Amendment) Order 2007, the official Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.

In exercise of his powers under the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) promulgated on Nov. 3, Musharraf made some amendments to some articles of the constitution, said the report.

Musharraf on Nov. 3 proclaimed a state of emergency in the country and promulgated the PCO, suspending the constitution. Then chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was sacked and some other judges of the Supreme Court and high courts declined to take oath under the PCO.

According to the newly promulgated order, those judges who did not take oath under the PCO would cease to hold office but would still get pensionary benefits.

Musharraf has also promulgated the Islamabad High Court (Establishment) Order, 2007, according to which Islamabad High Court will be set up and have its principal seat at Islamabad and shall start functioning with effect from the date to be appointed by the President.

Attorney General Malik Mohammad Qayyum on Friday confirmed that Musharraf would lift the emergency and the PCO would also be revoked on Saturday.

He elaborated that the amendments Musharraf proposed did not need ratification.
