An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted the eastern coastal areas of Indonesia's East Java province at 3:47 a.m. on Saturday.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 68 km under the sea at 8.63 degrees south latitude and 112.34 degrees east longitude, some 65 km southeast of Balitar, Antara news agency quoted Head of local Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BMG) Sugiharto as saying.
"This earthquake is relatively stronger than the previous quakes that rocked the eastern coasts of East Java," Sugiharto said.
The tremors of the earthquake were also felt by residents in Malang, Tulungagung, Trenggalek and Pacitan districts in East Java province.
But the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. There were no immediate reports on damages.
