South Korea's National Election Commission (NEC) said Wednesday that the ballot counting for Wednesday's presidential polls began at 7 p.m. (1000 GMT).
About 23.68 million out of a total of 37.65 million eligible voters cast their ballots in Wednesday's presidential polls all over the country, the NEC said.
The voter turnout rate of 62.9 percent was the lowest since 1987, it added.
The election watchdog said earlier that the preliminary result of the ballot counting will be released at about 9 p.m. (1200 GMT).
According to an exit poll conducted with 50,000 voters throughout the country by local media, 50.3 percent of the respondents gave their ballots to Lee Myung-bak of the conservative Grand National Party (GNP) in the presidential polls.
