Three British residents held in Guantanamo Bay have been released and are on their way back to the United Kingdom, British Foreign Office confirmed on Wednesday.
Jamil el Banna, Omar Deghayes and Abdennour Samuer were on a normal charter flight with counter-terrorism officers and members of the Metropolitan Police, would be arriving back in Britain "imminently," the ministry said.
According to the Sky News, the men are not British citizens but have put down roots in the United Kingdom before being detained at the United States Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay.
The United States accused Palestinian el Banna of being an al-Qaida recruiter and financier, Libyan Deghayes of associating withal-Qaida, and Algerian Sameur of being trained for combat in Afghanistan, the BBC reported, adding that there have been intensive negotiations between the UK and U.S. authorities over the past few months.
About 300 prisoners are held at Guantanamo Bay prison after the invasion of Afghanistan in early 2002.
