The African Union (AU) urged Cote d'Ivoire to step up its peace process in a statement issued on Friday.
In the statement issued by the Peace and Security Council, the AU expressed its satisfaction with the "encouraging" development of the peace process in Cote d'Ivoire and the effective implementation of the Ouagadougou peace agreement signed between the government and the rebels on March 4 this year.
It also called on the relevant parties to show their political sincerity, step up the process of identifying voters and national disarmament, and prepare for democratic, fair and transparent general elections.
The AU also urged the United Nations and the international community to continue their support for the peace efforts of the relevant parties and for the mediation efforts of Burkina Faso's President Blaise Compaore, as well as to provide necessary financial, logistics and technical support for the implementation of the Ouagadougou peace agreement.
Cote d'Ivoire has been going through a serious political and military crisis since former New Forces rebels took control of the northern half of the country.
President Gbagbo and Prime Minister Guillaume Soro, the political head of the rebels, signed the Ouagadougou peace agreement in March this year, under which Soro is justified to take up the post of prime minister. The two sides also agreed to launch a national disablement program on Dec. 22 this year, and to hold general elections before June next year.
