Thailand's Election Commission (EC) on Monday evening announced unofficial tally results pending confirmation, which saw the pro-Thaksin People Power Party (PPP) won Sunday's general election, grabbing 232 seats in the 480-member House of Representatives.
Secretary General Suthipol Thaveechaikarn confirmed that 32.08 million Thais, or 70.27 percent of eligible voters, have cast ballots, including those cast on Sunday, the official general election date and those during the Dec. 15-16 advance voting.
Suthipol said the final count of votes showed the PPP, seen as the new Thai Rak Thai Party, founded by the ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra and disbanded after last year's coup, has won 232 seats, several seats short of an absolute majority at the 480-seat House, while its major rival the Democrat Party got 165 seats.
They were followed by Chart Thai (Thai Nation) Party, which wins 37 seats, Puea Pandin (For the motherland) Party with 25 seats, Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana (Thais United National Development) Party with nine, Matchima Thipataya (Neutral Democratic Party) which gets seven and Pracharaj (Royal People) Party with five seats.
The results is pending certification from the EC as the authority agency is ready to investigate various allegations of election fraud and disqualify any winning candidates founded guilty.
The EC is expected to announce the official counting results in seven days as from Sunday.
