Citizens from the 10 new European Union (EU) member states will be able to get jobs more easily in Norway next year, according to reports from Oslo on Monday.
Norway is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA), which covers Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and the all EU members, offering many of the same advantages and obligations that EU nations enjoy, according to an agreement between the EU and the EEA.
Norwegian authorities are introducing new regulations from Jan.1 for people arriving from the 10 most-recent EU member countries. The new rules will allow applicants to start work while still awaiting work permits, the Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported.
The report said the change is partly due to the serious shortage of labor in Norway and it would be easier for Norwegian firms to recruit workers from Eastern Europe.
This year nearly 75,000 new work permits were issued by Norwegian authorities. Nearly a quarter of these are for workers in the construction industry.
