Thailand's Chart Thai Party leader Banharn Silpa-archa on Tuesday shot down rumors that he is bargaining for the prime minister's seat as a condition for forming a coalition government with the People Power party (PPP).
"We haven't decided on anything yet because we want to see how many red and yellow cards the Election Commission (EC) will hand out," Banharn explained. Moreover, he told local media to wait and see the final alliance results until next year.
The EC would rely on evidence to rule on how many red and yellow cards to be issued on electoral frauds in a few days after the election agency has received hundreds of suspected frauds cases in the past month.
According to the election law, a candidate who was issued with a red card will be disqualified in the by-elections which is now set on Jan. 13 next year, while a candidate can re-contest the by-elections with a yellow card.
Also on Tuesday, PPP's deputy secretary-general Noppadol Pattama said the negotiations between the PPP and Chart Thai Party were normal in politics and if Banharn tries to bargain for the prime ministerial seat he should "consider what he has to offer before making such a request."
The PPP won 233 of the total 480 parliament seats during the Sunday's general election. Although it is now the biggest party in the parliament, it has to wait for the possible red or yellow cards and then make an alliance with other parties so as to achieve half of the 480 seats which is needed for forming a government.
