Samak Sundaravej, Leader of the People Power Party (PPP), winner of Thailand's post-coup election, would hold a press conference on Jan. 4 next year to announce the formation of a new coalition government, party spokesman Kuthep Saikrajang said Wednesday.
The PPP spokesman also denied that Samak flew to meet ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, for whom the PPP openly declares support, in Hong Kong, according to news network The Nation.
The Election Commission (EC) announced Tuesday official voting results of Sunday's polls, which saw the PPP get 233 MP seats in the 480-seat House of Representatives, while its major rival Democrat with 166 seats.
They were followed by Chart Thai (Thai Nation) Party with 37 seats, Puea Pandin (For the motherland) Party with 24 seats, Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana (Thais United National Development) Party with nine, Matchima Thipataya (Neutral Democratic Party) with seven, and Pracharaj (Royal People) Party with five seats.
The PPP earlier said three small parties, understood as referring to the Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana, Matchima and Pracharaj, had agreed to join a PPP-led coalition government, which will garner a 254-seat majority at the 480-member parliament.
The PPP is believed to be trying to woo the other two smaller parties -- the Chart Thai and Puea Pandin, together with 61 seats in hand, to join in the coalition to secure a greater margin of absolute majority in the parliament, as required for the party to lead a government.
The Democrat Party has repeatedly rejected the idea of joining a PPP-led coalition government.
Formation of the new cabinet, including the top job of prime minister, will rely on negotiation terms and compromises that parties are willing to make.
