Brazilian Minister of Justice Tarso Genro said Wednesday that the country's legislation does not allow the extradition of 11 Brazilians to Italy for their alleged participation in Operation Condor decades ago, in which some Italians were missing.

In an interview to a local radio, Genro said he did not get anyofficial decision on the indictment of the Brazilian citizens, whoare part of a list, brought forward by Italian authorities, of 140 names charged with involvement in Operation Condor.

Italy's Attorney General Giancarlo Capaldo, who is investigating the disappearance of some Italian citizens in the operation, Wednesday asked the Brazilian government to extradite the Brazilians.

Capaldo also said two names were removed from the preliminary list because they were confirmed dead.

Brazilian officials said the list includes military officers like General Euclydes de Oliveira Figueiredo Filho, brother of former President Joao Baptista Figueiredo, who ruled the country from 1979 to 1985 and died in 1999.

Operation Condor was waged by South American right-wing dictators to crack down on oppositions in the 1970s and 1980s, according to Italian authorities.

Italy would also request the extradition of the Uruguayans, Paraguayans, Argentines, Peruvians, Chileans and Bolivians enlisted.
