More than 600 people died across Latin America and the Caribbean in the run-up to Christmas, reports said on Wednesday.
Brazil registered the largest number of deaths with 196 fatalities between last Friday and Tuesday, many in road accidents. Brazil's Transport Police reported a 117.7-percent rise in road deaths compared with the same period last year.
In Ecuador, 106 died and 208 injured, while Venezuela reported 87 deaths, mostly due to firearms injuries. In Honduras 77 died, while in Guatemala 38 died, with 18 killed by gunfire. In El Salvador 25 people died from violence and road accidents and in Nicaragua five died. All these were reported according to police tally.
In the Dominican Republic, the Emergency Operations Center said 14 died from Saturday to Tuesday in road accidents or of alcohol poisoning. In Argentina 10 died of violence and road accidents while 100 suffered fireworks injuries. Paraguay's Civil Protection Authority reported 24 dead and 191 injured, while Uruguay reported five dead and 25 injured.
In Bolivia 43 died and 130 injured, most of them in road accidents, according to police and rescuers. The worst accident occurred on Friday when 21 people were killed and 50 others injured as a bus fell from a cliff in Oruro. Mexico was comparatively calm with two reported deaths and seven injured.
