Philippine police have arrested a rebel leader who is charged with rebellion and has been on the run since 2001, local media reported Thursday.
Wahid Sali a.k.a Abubakar Abdul, Northern Mindanao commander of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), was captured on Wednesday in southern city of Butuan where he was hospitalized following a road accident.
Local television network GMA News quoted police reports as saying that Sali was among the nine passengers of a Nissan pick-up that was involved in a road mishap in Butuan over the weekend.
Despite his arrest, however, Sali remains confined at the hospital, the report said, without revealing the condition of Sali's injury.
Police said Sali has long been wanted for a 2001 rebellion charge, for which an arrest warrant was issued against him in southern Philippine region of Mindanao.
