Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht on Thursday condemned the slaying of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan.
"This is not only an attack on the life of a former prime minister and present opposition leader," Verhofstadt said. "This is yet another attack on the democratic process in Pakistan."
Both Verhofstadt and De Gucht condemned the "outrageous murder" in the strongest terms.
De Gucht said in a statement he is concerned that "extreme forces are strengthening their actions to destabilize the country and put it into chaos."
Benazir Bhutto was shot by a gunman during an election rally in the city of Rawalpindi south of capital Islamabad. The gunman then blew himself up, killing at least 22 others.
Bhutto was campaigning for the parliamentary elections scheduled for Jan. 8. She returned from exile in October in order to take part in the elections.
