Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen said in a statement on Thursday the tragic death of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto is a setback to democracy of Pakistan.

Benazir Bhutto made a brave return to her homeland to take part in free elections and to promote democracy, said Vanhanen.

"Her tragic death is a setback to democracy and speaks in a shocking way about the internal confrontations of Pakistan," said Vanhanen.

Pakistan former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed by a gunman who later blew himself up in a suicide attack in Rawalpindi, south of Pakistani capital Islamabad on Thursday.

Bhutto returned to Pakistan from self-imposed exile in October to contest the elections due in January 2008.
