U.S. President George W. Bush said Thursday that the United States strongly condemns the killing of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and those responsible must be brought to justice.

"The United States strongly condemns this cowardly act by murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy. Those who committed this crime must be brought to justice," Bush said in a statement in his ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Bhutto, 54, died in a hospital after a suspected suicide bombing rocked her election rally in Rawalpindi, south of Pakistan's capital Islamabad.

Bhutto, leader of the opposition Pakistan People's Party, served twice as Pakistan's prime minister between 1988 and 1996.
