Two Venezuelan government MI-17 helicopters took off at 3.30 p.m. local time Friday heading for Colombian city Villavicencio as part of the so-called Operation Transparency mission to rescue three people set for release by Colombia's largest illegal rebel army.

The aircraft, that are carrying Red Cross insignia, took off from the Santo Domingo air base in western Venezuelan state Tachira, which borders Colombia.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had inspected the aircraft at Santo Domingo.
