The military wing of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, known as al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, was dismantled and no longer existed in the West Bank, Interior Minister said on Saturday.
The militias have "positively reacted and committed themselves to Mr. President's decree which bans and dissolves all the militias and armed groups," the minister, Abdel Razak al-Yehia, told Voice of Palestine radio.
Al-Yehia said that the members of the brigades were "cooperative" after the Palestinian National Authority (PNA)assured them of their personal safety.
The minister also said that any statement issued under the motto of the former militia group will be false.
"If so, these statements would be issued by persons who still consider themselves as representatives of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades," he warned.
In August, Israel granted amnesty for a few hundreds of the Fatah military activists who signed a pledge not to carry out any more attacks against Israeli targets.
The move was to strengthen President Abbas whose security forces lost Gaza Strip in June for Hamas.
Al-Yehia hopes that other armed groups would "follow the steps of the al-Aqsa Brigades" and disarm.
Meanwhile, al-Yehia disclosed that the PNA will receive 50 bare Armored Personnel Carriers without machine-guns rigged as Israel opposes such equipment. Source: Xinhua
