Visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for putting an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Palestinian-Israeli fighting, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported on Monday.
At a meeting held at the French embassy in Cairo on Sunday evening, Sarkozy said it was high time to end the Arab-Israeli conflict that lasted for more than 60 years, according to the report.
The French president stressed the necessity of establishing a free and independent Palestinian state side by side with Israel.
France supports the establishment of a Palestinian state that would include the Gaza Strip, Sarkozy said, urging Israel to halt its settlement activities and exert more efforts to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Sarkozy also called on the Palestinians to recognize Israel's right to exist, saying France will also be against those who believe that Israel will not exist.
Sarkozy left Egypt on Monday morning, wrapping up a two-day official visit to the Arab country during which he held talks on Sunday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Mideast issues and bilateral ties. Source: Xinhua
