Tens of thousands of people thronged the area of the Monas Monument in central Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, to celebrate the New Year, which was also highlighted by spectacular fireworks.

After enjoying various forms of fireworks near the Monas Monument for 20 minutes, the people poured into the city since 21:00 on Monday till the change of the year.

All roads leading to Monas Monument were totally jammed by pedestrians thronging the streets of West Merdeka, Thamrin and Harnoni, Antara news agency reported on Tuesday.

The traffic jam became worse with thousands of motorcycles thronging the roads to Monas in convoys to celebrate the New Year in addition to musical shows.

Tens of thousands of people also blew trumpets in welcoming the New Year.

The city administration and the police deployed more than 17,000 officers in an effort to step up security and manage traffic in the capital.

Last year, millions of people flocked the National Monument during the New Year's Eve celebration, causing heavy traffic jams in the city.
