A U.S. helicopter bombed areas near the town of Iskandriyah south of Baghdad after two U.S. patrols attacked by roadside bombs, killing a suspected insurgent and wounding another, local police said on Tuesday.

Two roadside bombs detonated on Monday night near U.S. patrols outside the village of Lagash near the town of Iskandriyah, 50 km south of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

A U.S. helicopter flew over the area and bombed several positions around the sites of the two attacks, killing a man and wounding another, the source said.

The U.S. troops transported the two suspected insurgents to the police station in the town of Iskandriyah, he added.

Separately, a joint U.S. and Iraqi security force searched several areas north of the city of Hilla, some 100 km south of Baghdad, detaining 46 suspected insurgents, including a Saudi national, the source said.
