Somchai Juengprasert, one of the only five Thai Election Commission (EC) members, said on Tuesday that he preferred to quit as an election official, giving rise to some speculation that the EC is under high pressure.
However, Somchai, who is in charge of election fraud investigation, said he was not under pressure but he did not attend some EC meetings because he was busy or sometimes sick.
He was quoted by local news network The Nation as saying that he would rather return to work as a judge than stay as an EC member.
He said he had no conflicts with other EC members but he did not feel like carrying out some jobs. Somchai also told some local radios that he had completed his job in holding the election and that he believed the four other EC members could work without him.
Somchai is now awaiting a decision of the court as to whether he would be allowed to go back to work as a judge.
Just on Monday, Samak Sundaravej, leader of the People Power Party (PPP) which won last month's general election, hinted during a press conference that "a dark hand hidden behind" is pressing the EC and attempts to prevent the PPP from forming a new government. Source: Xinhua
