2007 was an excellent year for civil aviation, as only 136 serious accidents occurred around the world, the Aircraft Crashes Record Office (ACRO) said on Tuesday.

The number of air traffic accidents in 2007 was 28 less than in 2006, and this number is the smallest since 1963, said the Geneva-based organization in a statement.

The private organization, which documents air disasters worldwide, said that 965 people died in 2007 in serious accidents, which usually involve planes carrying more than six passengers.

The total of fatalities is 25 percent lower than 2006 and is the lowest since 2004, it said.

In 2007, three accidents caused the death of more than 100 people, two accidents between 50 and 100 fatalities and five accidents between 20 and 50 fatalities, according to the statement.

With 199 fatalities, the crash of a TAM Brazil's Airbus A320 in Sao Paulo on July 17 was the biggest crash occurred in 2007.

Other serious accidents included the crash of a Kenya Airways' Boeing 737-800 in Douala on May 5 with 114 fatalities and the crash of an Adamair's Boeing 737-400 off Ujung Pandang in Indonesia on Jan. 1 with 102 fatalities, the statement said.
